In honor of Dr. Suess’ Birthday, March is designated as National Reading Month. Kiwanis International conducts a program known as “Read Around the World” during March. Historically, the Grosse Ile Kiwanis Club arranges a special day in March where important people in the community go to the elementary schools and read to the classes. The idea is to convey the message that reading is so important that persons providing critical services will take time out of their day to read to a class. Readers typically include firefighters; fire marshal; police officers; police chief; animal control officer; township supervisor; judges; local church ministers; and other “important” members of the community (as well as Kiwanis members filling in where needed).
This year, the event cannot proceed normally due to COVID restrictions. Instead, the Grosse Ile Kiwanis asked each teacher and class to select a book they would like to have available in the classroom.. Twenty classes at Meridian Elementary School (grades 3 through 5) were invited to designate a book of their choice. The classes chose many outstanding story books to share for the year. The most popular choice was Pixie Pushes On by Tamara Bundy which was selected by 5 classes. Some classes selected classics like Johnny Tremain or Polar Express. Two classes eschewed traditional story type books and opted for scientific options instead. One class Chose Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls - a collection of 100 stories about extraordinary women (yes, there are boys in the class, and they will enjoy and learn from the stories too).
The Grosse Ile Kiwanis Club will deliver the books to the classrooms on March 2nd. Grosse Ile Kiwanis is a service and social club that provides programs for the betterment of the community, region, and the world - with their primary focus on programs benefitting children.
Thank you to all of the families and friends who participated in the GI Kiwanis Scavenger Hunt 2019! We hope you enjoyed learning about the Island, interacting with businesses you may not have known about, spending a great day experiencing our community in a new way!
Thank you everyone who sponsored, hosted spots, donated prizes, and volunteered. Without the community support, we wouldn't have had such a fantastic event.
We'd specifically want to thank the following sponsors and prize donors:
Congratulations to all of the prize winners! We had 9 prize baskets that included prizes donated from the various businesses around Grosse Ile. The winners were Carrie Mihalko, David Martz, Lincoln McKinnon, Kaitlyn Robinson, Nicole Krupa, Chelsea Rossman, Jack Armbruster, Nolan Barron, and Clayton Jacqmain.
Here are some of the things people had to say:
We look forward to making this an annual event. If you have any suggestions or would like to share pictures from this year, email us at GrosseIleKiwanis@gmail.com
We will be at the Grosse Ile Halloween Parade again in 2019. Stop by our table near Playscape Drive (in front of the Post Office) for candy, balloon animals, and other fun surprises!
Here is a look at some of our annual events to look forward to next year
Each year, Kiwanis Club of Grosse Ile donates dictionaries to Meridian Elementary School students. This year, we will be presenting the dictionaries to the 3rd grade classes. If you have a kiddo in the Class of 2029, we encourage you to take this opportunity to go over all of the exciting information they can learn by just cracking the cover!
At the end of every April, we organize an Island-wide Clean-up along the most traversed roads. All volunteers are welcome to join!
March is Reading month. Kiwanis International has a mission for all of their clubs to read to kids during the month. We get community leaders to volunteer with members to read to the kids of Parke Lane Elementary.
We proudly support the GIHS Key Club running the first water table during the Rock CF Half Marathon.
